Archived: TfL Journey Planner Data Updates – Feb 19

The Journey Planner team produce a weekly summary of our latest data updates, which includes all forthcoming bus service and stop changes for which timetables are available on Journey Planner, as well as in the Journey Planner API.

As these updates are of interest to the general public and developers alike, we’ll begin sharing them as regular posts on this blog. If there are any points of interest you’d like to see added to Journey Planner, just let us know. The email to do so is at the bottom of this post.

This is a brief summary of this week’s new data highlights. Full details are in this blog post:

Timetables

Bus-wise, new timetables with alternative routeings due to the closure of Bexley Village are available for Routes 492 601 and B12. These apply from Monday 22 February until Sunday 27 March. There are also changes to stops at Aldgate East station from Saturday 27 February and a small number of changes to operators.

On the river, Thames Clippers introduce new timetables from Monday 22 February on Routes RB2 (Vauxhall to Bankside), with new services to London Bridge and Canary Wharf on Route RB6 (Putney to Canary Wharf)

Stops

Around 80 stop changes have been added to NaPTAN – many are related to the revision of suggested Hail and Ride boarding points for Route 192 (Tottenham Hale to Enfield), with a number of name changes as well and removal of redundant stops in the Victoria, Embankment and Barbican areas.

Points of Interest

Some new points of interest have been added in the King’s Cross area this week.

New Stops and Stations and Stop Adjustments

Please note that these would be reflected in bus timetables shown above, where appropriate. Uploads of stop data to NaPTAN are sent weekly and should usually be available on Friday mornings. In addition, we are carrying out a detailed audit of all stops in London over the coming weeks to ensure they are named correctly and have the right coordinates.

  1. I appreciate the updates to journey planner so many thanks.
Am I alone in wishing we still had access to the same bus timetables which are shown on bus stops?
These were just one page of print for the whole route and so were easy to download and keep in a folder.
    John.

    1. John, thanks for the comments – the revised approach with the timetables was to avoid the need to download the PDF timetables which these previously used.

  2. Could the Digital Blog team have a close look at Hail and Ride sections and the way they are handled, both in journey planning and in announcements (or rather, the lack of them) on buses themselves.

Try planning a route to N22 7UA which is served by a H&R section on the 184 bus route. Journey planner seems to be totally unaware of the H&R section and instead plans a journey to a real stop on another route which could be some distance away.

It is even worse if the journey origin is Alexandra Palace. In that case 184 is the logical bus to use, but the JP plans a journey to a stop beyond the H&R section and then tells you to walk back a quarter of a mile along the exact same route.

Even if you know that N22 7UA is along the H&R section, the bus does not help you alight at the correct point. The digital sign just says “Hail and Ride Section” and the bus travels half a mile with no further announcements.

I think H&R sections need “virtual bus stops” which can be used for journey planning and in route announcements, and could also be visible in the “show all stops” details of Journey Planner.

    1. Harry. Thanks for the message. Hail and Ride routes have long been a concern to us, we used to add extra suggested boarding points where needed along Hail and Ride sections of routes for Journey Planning purposes, all of which would be assigned Naptan codes.

However, as this led to a mismatch between the stop sequences on Journey Planner and within Countdown (and the associated open data feeds), London Buses asked us to stop this approach, as they were working on a programme to include new suggested boarding points on those which did not already have them, consequently delivering consistency between JP and Countdown.

We shared our stop records to speed this process, and in recent weeks, Routes 384 499 and W10, with the 192 to follow shortly, have been improved. This does still mean that there are several routes, such as the 324, which require attention, as on Countdown, stretches of Hail and Ride routes are just assigned start and finish messages which are fine for people travelling on the vehicle, and for display on a map.

We continue to emphasise the importance of this to London Buses.

  3. Oh Journey Planner, why did you make the default include every form of transport? Doesn’t that ensure that not a single default search will be the one required? Or, every single search needs transport preferences updated to make it correct.
Wouldn’t it be more sensible to default it to the one most used and update preferences on the exceptions? Then at least most of the default searches would work. Or perhaps default to the top three (tube? bus? train?) with visible tick options & a ‘More travel options’ button?
You even seem to have half recognised how annoying this is by adding a ‘save my preferences for future visits’ tick box, but not fully, because ticking this box doesn’t seem to do anything at all. So it’s actually even more annoying. Unless there’s something more I need to know about ticking that box?

    1. Hello PRL, thanks for your feedback. We acknowledge the fact that there was a bug with ‘save preferences for future visits’ option, which is fixed now. We also appreciate your feedback regarding default preferences. However, research indicates that customers prefer default preferences, as this gives them flexibility to choose the best option that suits their travel preferences. We continuously look for customer feedback and will raise your suggestion in our future planning.
