NOTE: There is an issue at present with recently deleted stops not showing as deleted in Naptan – this is under investigation by us at the moment. All other stop changes (new stops, name changes, coordinate and stop letter adjustments are showing correctly)

  1. Earlier today I posted the comment below on uk.transport.london. On reflection it may be more likely to elicit action from the developers if I repeat it here. I apologise in advance if I am mistaken but I used the journey planner in the same way as tens of thousands of Londoners and visitors ….

Having tired with the frustration of using TfL’s new “improved” journey planner for bus arrivals I decided to develop my own application. This has progressed to the stage of searching for bus stops by name. You have to find your own solution as the API does not provide a direct way to do it (or anyway I cannot find it). I have been looking for a bug because my application often gives very different results to the same search with the journey planner but I now realise I am correct and the Tfl web site is wrong.

For example, if you search for a stop called Abbey Road TfL will usually return a pair of stops on route 31 although it sometimes suggests a couple of other stops with Abbey Road included in the stop name. My application returns a total of 7 stops called “Abbey Road” served by 10 more bus routes (57, 112, 131, 152, 187, 200, 219, 226, B11). Using the journey planner to search for each of those routes reveals that every one does indeed have a stop called Abbey Road for which it returns the same bus arrivals as my application.

It seems as if the programmer assumed every stop in London has a unique name (as opposed to stop or Naptan code) and therefore returned only the first exact match stop from a search. It seems inconceivable that the TfL developers have not tested this aspect of the search engine but they should either fix it immediately or withdraw it. Given the way many people use the planner, especially visitors to London, it is not acceptable to leave it as it is.

    1. Thank you for your detailed comments. There are three distinct areas in bus stop naming.

      1) London Buses Infrastructure team determine the name of each individual bus stop – these are what you would see on the bus stop flag itself and also on in-bus signs. These do not have to be unique, so as you have identified, there can be several stops with the same name, but they would each have distinct Naptan IDs.

      2) Journey Planner, pre-dating the introduction of the present website in 2012, groups physical bus stops (referred to as stop points) into hubs, even if there is only one bus stop. These must have unique names, generally with the addition of an area, postal district or junction name.

      3) The disambiguation list, is, as you say, assuming in some cases that there is only one stop where multiple stops exist. This is maintained separately from Journey Planner, but ultimately we need to be matching at the hub level – colleagues are currently investigating this.
